Every great and commanding movement in the annals of the world
is due to the triumph of enthusiasm. Nothing great was ever achieved without it. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

An earlier article in this series – Asking the Right Questions to Swiftly Achieve 100% Renewable Energy –showed what four right questions might look like for swiftly achieving 100% renewable energy.

A preceding article in this series – What Achieving 100% Renewable Energy Might Look Like showed that the fourth of those right questions – “What might swiftly achieving 100% renewable energy look like?” — might be re-stated as:

“What might swiftly adopting a renewable energy option look like?”

If a decision-making process for achieving 100% renewable energy – and decision-makers persuading themselves what energy options they want to adopt — looks like:

①      decision-makers in consensus on a planning process through which they:

  • identify energy options available for adoption,
  • evaluate benefits of those energy options,
  • compare benefits of those energy options, and
  • persuade themselves what energy options they want to adopt now, and what energy options they might want to adopt later, to deliver greatest benefits for energy service users and achieve 100% renewable energy,

decision-makers in consensus on a plan for achieving 100% renewable energy that states:

  • what energy options in what amounts they want to adopt now, and
  • what energy options in what amounts they might want to adopt later,
  • to deliver greatest benefits for energy service users and achieve 100% renewable energy

decision-makers in consensus on procurement processes:

  • to ensure that an energy option delivers performance benefits, and
  • to apportion economic benefits of an energy option between energy service providers and energy service users, and

      decision-makers in consensus on:

  • adopting an energy option and placing it in service
  • delivering the energy option’s benefits to energy service users
  • measuring benefits actually delivered by the energy option, and
  • comparing its actually-delivered benefits with benefits expected at the time when decision-makers decided to adopt the energy option

(as shown in the most recent article in this series), decision-makers swiftly adopting a renewable energy option — and swiftly achieving 100% renewable energy — might look like:

decision-makers who are enthused by benefits delivered by most-recently adopted energy options, and who want to deliver greatest benefits faster for energy service users

B       decision-makers who are enthused to deliver greatest benefits faster for energy service users, and who want to persuade themselves faster what energy options they want to adopt to deliver greatest benefits for energy service users

decision-makers who are enthused to persuade themselves fasterwhat energy options they want to adopt to deliver greatest benefits for energy service users, and who want to plan faster to adopt those energy options

D       decision-makers who are enthused to plan faster to adopt energy options that deliver greatest benefits for energy service users, and who want to procure faster those energy options

decision-makers who are enthused to procure faster to adopt energy options that deliver greatest benefits for energy service users, and who want to adopt faster those energy options

decision-makers who are enthused to adopt faster energy options that deliver greatest benefits faster for energy service users, who are enthused by benefits delivered by most-recently-adopted energy options (step  A  ), and so on, as shown in Figure 1:

A Decision-making Process for Swiftly Achieving 100% Renewable Energy and Reversing Global Warming
Figure 1: A Decision-making Process for Swiftly Achieving 100% Renewable Energy and Reversing Global Warming

That positive feedback loop – through which benefits delivered enthuse decision-makers to adopt energy options faster to deliver benefits faster, and so on (Steps  A   through   F   and back to Step  A  )– might be called an Adoption Accelerator.

The Adoption Accelerator applies the power of enthusiasm — hard-wired into the brain of every person on the planet – to exponentially accelerate the making of decisions to adopt and the adoption of carbon-emissions-avoiding energy options.

This is what Ralph Waldo Emerson was talking about when he said, “Every great and commanding movement in the annals of the world is due to the triumph of enthusiasm.”  Every great and commanding movement in the annals of the world – like reversing global warming – is due to the triumph of enthusiasm because it’s the enthusiasm we feel while doing the work that gives meaning to the work and to our lives.

The end result of the work – reversing global warming – is our gift to future generations.  The enthusiasm we feel while doing that work in the present is our gift to ourselves. The more we give that gift to ourselves, the more we’ll want to do the work. The more we want to do the work, the faster we’ll do the work, and the greater and more commanding will be our legacy for future generations.

When decision-makers ask themselves a fourth right question – “What might swiftly achieving 100% renewable energy look like?” – they engage themselves in thinking about the pre-existing answer revealed by that right question.

By thinking about that pre-existing answer – which might look like the decision-making process for swiftly achieving 100% renewable energy shown in Figure 1 — decision-makers persuade themselves of that pre-existing answer.

By asking themselves that right question, decision-makers persuade themselves and come into consensus on that pre-existing answer, and they think it was their own idea.

Wondering what decision-makers’ implementation of a decision-making process for swiftly achieving 100% renewable energy might look like?

My new book, You Can Reverse Global Warming, shows how to create and implement a decision-making process for exponentially adopting carbon-emissions-avoiding energy options, exponentially growing economic wealth, swiftly achieving 100% renewable energy and reversing global warming.

      Erik,

I would like to help. Your model of transition to renewables looks like it operates at the margins of a large system.

It seems to avoid any focus on if the system has viability in any present or future state.

Here is video that will help you put the meaning to the above statements.
